So what happened to mans best friend lately? You should understand that training your pet to be perfect does not take effect immediately and can be hard work depending on the specific dog or breed. First off you should understand what you are working for, and in the end your main goal should be a happy pet.

Happy dogs are obedient and well trained. Dogs can sometimes become confused with the role that they play in our lives and what they are and are not supposed to do. Without your dog understanding what place they have they will never understand who is the Alpha or the leader in your household.

Any good program will help you establish this main idea for your dog to understand. If a dog or any “Pack” animal for that matter believes that they are at the top of the command chain they will attempt to give their own commands. This can become stressful because the animal will start thinking that they have the responsibility for protecting and caring for all members in the pack.

You as the owner must establish yourself as the leader of the pack, and what is interesting is that the dog will begin to establish a pecking order based on your actions as of who is in charge. Sometimes dogs can be dominant in nature and you may actually have a tough time establishing the alpha presence in your pack.

Here are a few things to think about and see if you fall into any of these categories with your dog.

* Since dogs look at food as who is served first is the most important. Do you eat before you feed your dog?
* Does your dog walk behind you? What about through the house? What about around doors? Dogs should follow the leader of the pack.
* Do your dog(s) sleep with you? The leader of the pack or the alpha dog will take up the most comfortable or appealing spot and sleep by himself.
* Does your dog completely not pay attention to your commands?

These are some items to think about and you should think about how you can establish being the leader of the pack to complete the perfect pet training exercises. This does not mean that you need to harm or mistreat your dog in any way.

However, if your pet is completely misbehaving you can put him on his/her back hold them firmly and look into their eyes. You should do this until he/she is relaxed. Doing so is extremely simple and will show that you are the boss and have complete control.

Think on these items and this should get you started, I wish you the best of luck in training the perfect pet.

If you have found this article, obviously you are searching for help with your pet. You have found the right article, I have studied primitive behavior of animals all my life to better understand my own pets. Most dogs still have instincts from when their ancestors were wild and free. Cats still have carnivore instincts even though they have been domesticated for hundreds of years and have become smaller in stature to there cousins, the big cats. Horses, even domesticated ones still have the same fears that their wild family members do.

Horses:

Have you ever wondered why horses seem to be jumpy around humans?
Well the answer is actually simple,You are a predator and have the ability to eat them. Predators have certain characteristics that mark them as predators and all prey animals know these characteristics. For example: You never want to look your animal directly in the eye and you never want to approach it head on. All natural predators (that includes humans) have eyes that are set close together, this is important because horses and other prey animals see this characteristic and assume that you are a predator and become jumpy and cautious.

The best way to counteract this is to look slightly down when you are approaching them, this signals that you are not in hunting mode and their flight or fight instincts don’t go off. Always use calming voices and sounds when talking with your pet and never approach fast or aggressively. If you are having trouble catching your horse, walk up to its side then slightly turn and begin to walk away, you may have to repeat this over a few times, but your pet should begin to follow you. You can even use clicking noises or a piece of apple or carrot to help entice them to follow. The objective is to eventually get them to follow you with out bribery and make it easier for you to catch them.

Cats:

Have you ever got up in the morning and stepped outside on your front deck only to feel something cold and squishy under your foot, you look down and see a died mouse, and as you hop into the house to wash it’s guts off your foot, you silently swear to yourself to kill your cat?

This is a behavior that can not be controlled really, but maybe I can shed some light on it so you can better understand why your beloved pet feels it necessary to leave these dead things on your front door mat. No, they are not trying to get back at you because you went away for a few hours and left them alone. It is actually the opposite.

If you watch wild cat behavior you will see that the mother feline will often bring back a kill (live/dead) to its cubs after hunting. This is to insure that her little family eats and if it’s alive she is trying to teach them hunting skills for when they are older. Of course this is typically a female response but male cats can exhibit this behavior as well.

Your pet is trying to take care of you, they love you and consider you one of their little ones. This is not an act of revenge or punishment, but one of love. The best advice I have for you is to do what I do, I look down at my precious baby and say “Mystic, mommy doesn’t eat mice.” Then I bend down and pick it up and throw it in the outside garbage.

Dogs:

One of the most serious behavioral problems with dogs that I have run across is dominance issues. All dogs run off a hierarchical system, which means that the one highest on the totem poll wins. In a typical pack, there are the alphas (owner), Beta (this is usually the baby sitter), then the pups (very young children), and the omega (any other animal) this is the lowest position on the totem pole.

More often with male dogs and especially dogs that are highly intelligent or prey driven, the pup status meshes with the omega position. The omega’s always get the worst of the worst, even if they haven’t done anything wrong, they are there to take it because the others say so. In cases like this, there is really nothing you can do but separate the animals and only allow contact under supervision.

If you are having problems with your pet trying to press dominance issues over you or your child(ren), there is a simple trick that you can do. You need to be careful when implementing it, but it is what the alphas do to hold position in their packs. If your dog makes an aggressive move towards you or your children, knock him down a peg by putting him physically on his back and holding the palm of your hand over his throat. This is were the careful part comes in, you don’t want to choke your animal, you only want to put slight pressure, enough that your animal knows you’re there. Say ‘NO’ in a very deep tone (you don’t have to yell) then stand up and walk away. It may take a few times, but your pet will get the idea. Also, if your dog comes up to you after wards or after getting in trouble and licks you, it is their way of apologizing.

I recommend watching some wildlife videos, you would be surprised at how much you can learn about animal behavior. Once you understand the core causes of certain behaviors and instincts of your animal, you will find training them simple and easy. Remember, patience and repetitiveness is a trainers best friend.

Training your pet to become a responsible dog is something that requires planning, patience, and undivided attention. Raising a perfect dog is not possible, not even raising a perfect child, but you can at least be a good responsible dog owner and trainer. The basic task of the dog owner is to try to make his dog understand him. Dog owners do not need to understand the dog’s behavior but instead try to make your dog understand first what you want him to do. The technique is to choose the right approach in adapting your Long Island dog training methods by establishing your person as the dog leader. This is a little bit difficult mixing human communication skills with dog communication techniques.

The things the dog needs to know ideally are the things that could probably upset you and somehow makes you want to kick him in the butt instead of sweetly hugging him. The dog does not look cute anymore if he pees on your favorite carpet or raids your garbage and scatters the trash all over the place. Of course, you cannot say “you are grounded” and put him in a leash if he does not understand what you do not want him to do. These are matters of management rather than training. Put your garbage to a place your dog cannot reach and do not let your dog enter your favorite room if you are not ready and willing to put up with him peeing anywhere. Yuck! You try raising a child and it would be the same prevention techniques! Sometimes one may realize that the best way for preparing yourself to caring for a baby is to learn to put up with your pet dog first using Long Island dog training techniques.

The basic dog commands are “sit”, “down”, “stand”, “come”, and “easy”. These commands will at least keep your dog safe from you losing your sanity. You can make your dog’s life better, healthier, and comfortable when you successfully train him what you want him to understand and need to do because this makes the dog moves freely within your range without you barking at him in a foul mood. The main goal of Long Island dog training method is to keep you in your best behavior towards your pet while making your pet remain cute and huggable training him to become an obedient, well trained, and well behaved dog. The basic rule is to come into terms with your dog teaching him eye-to-eye. This means maintaining an eye contact while you communicate and teach your dog to do what you want him to do. Long Island dog training methods involves you training your dog and gives you ideas when your dog trains you. One good example is when your dog begs for food while you are eating on your table and you give him food. Think if you want him to beg for food every time you eat on your table. The dog is likely training you to give him food when you eat on the table. Smile if this idea did not occur to your mind yet.

Timing is absolutely critical in cat pet training in terms of using positive reinforcement. The reward for your cat good behavior must occur almost immediately, if possible within seconds. Otherwise your cat may not associate the reward to that particular action.

For instance, you can throw a piece of dry cat food for her to chase as a reward for any good actions such as using the scratching post. Many cats enjoy chasing (hunting) for their food and it’s definitely good exercise for them.

Consistency is the key in cat pet training. Everyone in your family should try to reward the same desired behavior. Any inconsistency such as rewarding when she is done with her scratching post and is walking towards you will only reinforce that there’s reward for walking towards you.

Using Positive Reinforcement in Cat Pet Training

Food treats, praise, petting or even a favorite toy or game are just some positive reinforcement you can use. You should reward your cat for every time you catch her performing the desired behavior such as scratching the scratching post. Instead of taking your cat to the post and holding her paws and demonstrating to her what she’s supposed to do will most likely frighten her and have the opposite effects of encouraging her to use it. Rather, you should try to entice her by placing a toy dangling on the post or spraying catnip (if she reacts positively to it). In this way, she will be more likely to perform the behavior again since it’s more comfortable to her. It’s important to always keep in mind to view her world from her point of view.

Once your cat starts on this desired behavior, you may want to reward her with treats constantly. For instance, reward for every three out of four times performed. As times goes by, start rewarding her lesser from about half the time to one-third of the time and so on, until you’re only rewarding her with praises and an occasional treat. But keep in mind that you will still have to carry on praising her every time. In this way, you won’t need to carry with you a pocketful of treats, but it’s definitely worth it to surprise your cat once in a while.

The Plus and Minus of Punishment

Punishment can take different forms. It can be verbal, postural, or physical and is meant to make your cat immediately associate something unpleasant when she does something you don’t want her to do. To make your punishment effective in any cat pet training, it must be delivered when your cat is engaging in the undesirable behavior – caught red-handed. Even if the punishment is delivered a few seconds later, your cat will not associate that punishment to that behavior. Instead, the punishments seem to be random for her.

Remember, cats are still animals. They do not have a sense of morals and definitely do not act out of spite or revenge.

Never use physical punishment that involves discomfort or pain as this may cause her to bite, defend her or resort to more undesirable behaviors. Hold your cat’s neck skin and shaking her are just some forms of undesirable punishments. Punishments that might associate with other stimuli is also not very good. For example, a cat that is punished for getting too close to a new baby might even become more aggressive towards babies in the future.

That’s why physical punishments are not advisable in cat pet training as it may erode your cat’s trust and frighten her. Instead, the most effective punishments are those that do not come directly from you.

For example, you may apply double-sided tape on your couch when your cat enjoys scratching it. Cats rarely like sticky paws and they will perceive the couch as delivering the punishment. In this way, your cat will not even have any undesirable behaviors when you are not around.

Another important key element to take note is that you will need to help your cat understand what you want her to do and provide appropriate outlets for her normal cat behaviors.

One of the reasons why cats are such fun companions is when they’re not sleeping. Many enjoy playing. Playing actually will help your cat develop physically as well as behaviorally. Having sufficient play outlets can reduce undesirable behaviors. You can also build great bonds with your cats by using the power of playing and eventually enhancing the quality of life for both of you during a cat pet training session.

Do you have an unruly dog or cat that just won’t behave? When animals don’t listen to their masters and start to become destructive around the house, it is probably time for some good old fashioned pet training. There is much more to pet training than just teaching your dog the basic commands like sit, stay, heel, lay down, and roll over. When you can become the leader for your animals, they will follow you and live up to the name of man’s best friend.

There are many pet training tools that you can use if you prefer to try teaching your
pet commands or tricks at home. You don’t have to be a professional dog trainer to
get your dog or cat to come, stay, or listen to you. The first rule to follow is to be very
calm and assertive around your dogs and cats, so that they get the message that you
are in control. You might also want to purchase training leads, collars, treats, leashes
and other helpful pet supplies to assist you in the teaching process.

When you begin your pet training, whether with a professional or at home, remember
that if you get frustrated or angry with your pets, you probably won’t be able to teach
them very easily. Patience and repetition is key, and the more you practice and also
exercise your animals, the better your relationship with them will be. Consider getting
a pet training video or book to help you teach your dog or cat the best behavior.

It can be a great feeling being the owner of a dog they can bring you joy and companionship and you will always have someone to come home to after a hard day at work, there is nothing better than being greeted by a wagging tail and a happy face! But are you in need of some pet training tips? When you have a dog, no matter what breed you own, it is important that your pet is well trained and behaved, and that is why it is important to begin pet training as early as you can. Your dog needs to learn pet training tips such as; house breaking, walking on a leash without pulling and coming back to you when you call him. These are all basic obedience traits that your dog needs to adopt in order to be well trained and easier to look after.

Here are some pet training tips that you should remember before you begin training your dog:

1 Try not to ask your dog to do anything that he can evade. If your dog gets frustrated by you being strict and commanding, then your dog will see this as a negative thing, so you must try to respect your dog’s behaviour and act correctly at the early stages of pet training.

2 Always remember to praise or reward your dog for any good performances that he does. This is a very important pet training tip that you must follow strictly in order to boost your dog’s confidence and so that your dog will be more willing to follow instructions that you give him and he will also develop a good relationship with you. Doing this will lead to good habits in your dog’s behaviour.

3 Try never to punish or tell your dog off during training because a punishment will act as a negative for your dog and you will find that he might not want to listen to what you are saying. Praise him for the good things he does instead.

4 Make sure to penalize your dog. This means that you should issue your dog a penalty which might be anything that your dog does not enjoy, such as ignoring him or maybe a leash jerk when he is not walking like he should on his leash remember, this is not a punishment it is a simple prod in the right direction.

Dog training is an integral part of maintaining a healthy relationship between you and your pet. There are various pet books available at discount pet supply stores, but if you are looking for the cliff notes, I recommend this type of pet training formula. A typical 3-step procedure in caring for your animal should follow these 3 guidelines: Discipline, Exercise and Reward.

Discipline:

A dog more so than any other pets needs discipline. This is simply because the Canine species is one of the more social and trainable domestic pets. You don’t want your Labrador going crazy when company comes over or a Shepherd that barks at the moon. So, in order to train your pet, you must show it that you are the boss.

In the animal Kingdom, there is a hierarchy and this hierarchy is natural in pack animals, such as your dog. So, you simply show it that you are the leader. In order to do this, you must act like the leader. This means that your pet should follow you in and out of rooms, doorways or even on a leash. Never let your pet lead you and if it tries to go around you cut off its path just like a real Alpha male would do. Shorten your leash to 12in if your pet continuously pulls forward on the leash. Teach your pet discipline and never reward anything but the absolute best behavior. This stage requires much patience from the pet owner and is a crucial part of a healthy pets life. Remember you are training your pet, not the other way around.

Exercise:

Another critical aspect of training your pet is exercise. Certain breeds will require more exercise then others. Typically it is the working breed type dogs that require the most. For these types of pets a 45-minute per day workout session is crucial. Whenever possible you should workout with your dog. Whether it is throwing a ball, going for a jog or just walking around in the woods, this time is integral in bonding with your pet. Be sure to have a good dog leash or harness for your pet if you live in a busy part of town.

Typically dogs that are destructive or overly aggressive aren’t getting enough exercise. If your pet isn’t tired at night, run them during the day. If you give your dog adequate exercise it will help him or her calm down and be more responsive to training. Have a spot for your dog to sleep and ensure that they lay down there consistently. For outside dogs provide a dog house or structure and for inside dogs pet beds will work nicely. This again shows the dog their place in this household.

Reward:

Rewarding your animal can mean many different things. To a pet, reward may mean a treat, a nice scratch on the butt or playing ball. Keep that in mind when you are training your pet. You don’t want to come home and immediately love on your pet, because it may see that as reward for an action. Instead come home and ask your pet to sit or shake, then reward them with a hug or scratch. When you pet behaves badly, you do not hit your pet or hurt your pet, but rather do not reward your pet and ignore your pet. Remember, your pet sees attention as reward. In fact, you should often ignore your pet as you walk into the room.

Have you ever seen puppies or inferior dogs run up and lick an Alpha male? Of course you have, that’s the way they show they are subordinate. How does the alpha male react? He simply ignores them or shuns them away with a snarl.

Now remember the same holds true for this hierarchy. Your pets runs up to you and licks you or jumps on you, it wants attention, provide it only after a desired action and sometimes ignore it all together. This lets your pet know, you are the king and a pet that knows its place is much easier to train.

Pet Training can last a short period of time or a long period of time, but is totally dependant on the owner. When you train your pet don’t think like a human, think like a dog. How a dog interacts with other dogs, how they like to run and play and what makes them feel like they were rewarded. Pet owners often need more training then their pets. Follow these three steps and your dog is guaranteed to respond.
